Apocalyptica

Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol. 2 (Throwdown Records)

They’ve been doing this whole “metal meets cello” thing for more than 20 years and you’d think by now the novelty would have completely worn off, but here we are. Another album where they play exclusively Metallica tracks, 26 years after the first time they did it for their debut album — and this time, they actually got half of Metallica to participate.

Evergrey

Theories of Emptiness (Napalm Records)

After three decades of doing their thing, Evergrey are back with their 14th studio album, Theories of Emptiness. With this being their follow up to 2022’s A Heartless Portrait (The Orphean Testament), it’s a solid addition to their discography that oscillates between melancholy and heaviness. It does just enough to remind you that this is, in fact, an Evergrey record for better or worse.

Nightmare

Encrypted (AFM Records)

For 45 years, Nightmare’s been around in one form or another (aside from that hiatus that ended in 1999), putting out some hard hitting heavy metal. Though lineup changes have left fans wondering which iteration they’ll get next, this current one with Barbara Mogore behind the mic sounds pretty damn good.

Umbra Vitae

Light of Death (Deathwish Inc.)

Featuring members of Converge, Twitching Tongues, The Red Chord, and Uncle Acid, this veritable supergroup hits like a fucking truck. With this being their second full-length release following their 2020 album Shadow of Life, it’s obvious these guys know how to put together an ass-beater of a record. Definitely take some time out of your Friday to check this out.

Vomit the Soul

Massive Incineration (Unique Leader Records)

Though our review for this record may suggest that it’s not the most groundbreaking thing out today, Massive Incineration was described as a “quick, cheap, greasy, wholly satisfying bacon cheeseburger that just came off the grill because you came at the right time during a shift where the kid making it still has some life left in his eyes.” Basically, it’s comfort food in brutal death metal form, so eat up.
