This week’s new heavy metal releases include black metal in space, post-rock in a frenzy, death metal in league with Satan, and more! To the metals…
Darkthrone – It Beckons Us All…….
Genre: Black/heavy metal
Origin: Kolbotn, Akershus, Norway
Label: Peaceville
Buy now on Bandcamp
On album number twenty, Fenriz and Nocturno Culto are taking this black metal party to space. All the evil you’d want from the band is there, but what I’ve heard so far includes some psychedelic atmosphere. It’s a pretty fun shake-up.
Deicide – Banished By Sin
Genre: Death metal
Origin: Tampa, Florida
Label: Reigning Phoenix
Buy now on Amazon
It’s been six years since Glen and the gang brought their brand of sinister death metal to the masses. Album number thirteen (spooky!) features a new rhythm guitarist, some controversial artwork choices, and all the brash heaviness you’d expect. Check out out deep dive with Glen here.
Full Of Hell – Coagulated Bliss
Genre: Grindcore
Origin: Ocean City, Maryland
Label: Closed Casket
Buy now on Bandcamp
Last year saw the ever-prolific Full Of Hell drop a pair of collaboration records and a split, but they’re back this year on their own. Coagulated Bliss is a brief but efficient grinding good time. This has some hard rocking grooves, some hardcore fury, and more. If you’re not feeling a track wait about ninety seconds and they’re move on since they rarely exceed two minutes on a track.
Glassing – From The Other Side Of The Mirror
Genre: Post-rock/mathcore
Origin: Austin, Texas
Label: Pelagic
Buy now on Bandcamp
Pelagic Records seldom miss, and the latest from Glassing is another win for the label. If you’re a fan of post-rock swells or shoegaze spacy-ness but yearn for flurries of chaos, this give this a spin. So often a post-____ record builds to a crescendo, but rarely do they explode like this record does.
Harvestman – Triptych: Part One
Genre: Folk/drone
Origin: Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Label: Neurot Recordings
Buy now on Bandcamp
While Neurosis remains dormant (dead?) Steve Von Till is once again taking us into nature and some more experimental realms with his Harvestman project. Seldom is there a traditionally heavy moment or really traditional song structure. This is all unease via drone, programmed noises, and vibes.
Inter Arma – New Heaven
Genre: Sludge/experimental-metal
Origin: Richmond, Virginia
Label: Relapse
Buy now on Bandcamp
Inter Arma are a band I have a lot of respect for because they keep me guessing. Their last album was a covers album with a Prince cover. Didn’t see that coming. This time they have infused a ton of dissonance and energy into their sludge sound. If you ever wrote them off for being slow or whatever, this might be the turn you’ve been waiting for.
Ou – 蘇醒 II: Frailty
Genre: Progressive metal
Origin: Beijing, China
Label: InsideOut
Buy now on Bandcamp
A few years ago Ou dropped their debut record and while I dig it, I figured they were on the verge of a really special album. Their sophomore release is that special album. They are being co-produced and mixed by Devin Townsend so their rhythmic prog has his signature heft behind it. There’s truly nothing else like Ou.
St. Vincent – All Born Screaming
Genre: Experimental rock
Origin: Dallas, Texas
Label: Total Pleasure Records
Buy now on Amazon
While, I’m not sure if this is the metal album Annie Clark intends to make, this is a darker turn for her. You’re getting some fuzzy guitars, heavy synths, and driving rhythms from Dave Grohl on drums. Honestly, sometimes I include an album or artist just outside of what I’m supposed write about as a way to be like, “trust me.” This is one of those.
